Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge in microbiology, molecular and cellular biology will be beneficial but no prerequisite is required as long as the student is keen to read the bibliography provided by the speakers before the sessions.

Course objectives and description

ABCV, Advanced Biology Course in Virology is designed for PSL Master and PhD students.
Aims : The goal of this course is to provide an overview of current research in the field of virology in order to understand the growing impact of emerging or re-emerging viral Infectious diseases for human and animal health.
Themes : Viruses are strictly intracellular parasites and therefore developed multiple strategies to subvert host cell machinery and defenses. Their modes of transmission are also very diverse with consequences on the measures that can be implemented to prevent or control their spread within the targeted population. Altogether, the threat pose by viruses can only be tackled with multidisciplinary approaches between fields such as molecular virology, medicine, entomology, ecology, mathematical modelling, human science and other fields.
Organization : The course will be based on research seminars (each including an introduction for the non-specialists) by junior or senior scientists recognized in their field.
Plenty of time will be made available to exchange with the speakers.
The seminars are open to everyone but with limited space for students requiring grade (24 students maximum).
The program will be organized over 12 lectures, in visio-conference, at a frequency of one session per week (every Wednesday from 17h15 to 19h45), from the 1st of February to the 26th of April (excluding 8th of March, PSL Week). The complete program will be made available shortly.

Assessment

At each session, two students will be asked to present an article selected from the speaker’s publications or field. Evaluation will be based on the oral presentation, quality of article analysis and answers to questions.
